 WHAT IS SOLIDARITY?

December 20 is International Human Solidarity Day. The opportunity to be interested in others and to help them if they need it. Being united is a great way to live together, isn't it?

What is solidarity?

This is what unites people in a sense of mutual aid. These people feel connected because they are part of the same family, or live in the same city, the same country, on the same planet… Being united is the opposite of being selfish.

But how do we stand together?

Everyone can be in their own way. Defending a fellow victim of injustice is a gesture of solidarity. And you can donate food, clothes, or toys to an association that helps people in need. Our society is also based on solidarity: for example, your parents contribute, pay a sum to the State, to provide everyone with free health care.

Solidarity is also international

Rich countries, like France, help poorer countries to develop. They fight together against poverty, to improve access to care, to education, to ensure respect for human rights... Finally, if a country suffers a natural disaster, an earthquake, it can ask other countries to send rescuers, doctors, money...

It's not always easy to be united!

Being supportive often requires courage, time, sometimes money, and it can also shake up our habits. However, solidarity is important because supporting each other is one of the best ways to create a fairer world.
