 What is health?

Health is not only about the body, but also about the mind. According to the World Health Organization, it is defined as: "a state of complete physical, psychological and social well-being, and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity" (Constitution of the World Health Organization of Health, 1946). It is, therefore, possible to live with a chronic illness, such as diabetes or bipolar disorder, while being healthy. Healthy people lead active lives, maintain relationships with friends, and feel good in body and mind. Health is not an end in itself, but rather a resource for everyday life that allows people to carry out life projects and meet their needs (Ottawa Charter, 1986).

In recent years, the concept of positive mental health has been increasingly used in Canada. Positive mental health refers to a sense of subjective well-being that is based on two complementary and distinct components: emotional well-being (having positive emotions about one's life such as being happy and satisfied) and well-being. psychological and social (having a sense of commitment and fulfillment in one's private and social life).
